Collection constitutes a record of the development of local farming organizations, formed to protect farming interests into a highly sophisticated, highly financed and multifaceted organization. Collection includes correspondence and other records relating to activities and operations of the federation, its subdivisions, American Farm Bureau Federation, and Iowa Farm Bureau Women, and to various agricultural and political issues and federal and state agricultural programs. Includes a history of the federation and material relating to farm institutes, extension service, farm prices, agricultural production, soil conservation, taxation, schools, religion, reapportionment, lobbying, Wheat Referendum, and Congressman Joseph Resnick's attack on the American Farm Bureau Federation. Correspondents include: J. Merrill Anderson, E. Howard Hill, state and federal legislators, Agricultural Hall of Fame, and Iowa and U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.

The first county farm bureaus in the state of Iowa were organized in Clinton and Scott counties on September 1, 1912. The purpose of the farm bureaus was to coordinate the agricultural activities of the county and to work in cooperation with other local farm associations.
